Abstract

1,027,222. Furnace walls. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd., and J. R. BEATTIE. April 9, 1963 [May 3, 1962], No. 17082/62. Heading F4B. A heat treatment furnace for heating sheet glass and other purposes has cavity side walls 1 formed by spaced partitions 2 . . . 6, the innermost partitions being coated on at least one surface with a coating comprising a refractory material to establish a layer on that surface having a surface reflectivity greater than its surface absorptivity at the operating temperatures. The partitions 2 . . . 6 are held in spaced relation by refractory spacers 7 carried by rigid frames 8. The partitions 2 . . . 4 are made of refractory metallic material, partition 5 is of stainless steel and partition 6 of aluminium. The outer surface of partition 2 and the inner and outer surfaces of partitions 3, 4 have layers 9 . . . 13, preferably 0À005 inch thick, of zirconia which includes 5% by weight of calcium oxide, said layers being deposited as an atomized spray. These layers cause more heat to be reflected by the surface than is absorbed by the same, and cause heat to be redirected towards the interior of the furnace. Other refractory materials may be used provided their heat reflectivity is greater than their heat absorptivity at a substantial portion of the wavelengths below 6 microns. Heating elements 14 of nickel-chromium strip are supported by refractory bodies 15 on the innermost partition 2. Gas burners may be used instead. The base 16 and the roof 17 of the furnace are of refractory material. Slidable roof closing members 18 can be opened for lowering a glass sheet 19 into the furnace.
