Abstract

1,027,176. Freeze drying. HUPP CORPORATION. Nov. 8, 1962 [Nov. 13, 1961; Oct. 31, 1962], No. 42226/62. Heading F4G. In apparatus for freeze-drying liquid and semi-liquid products the product is reduced to a finely divided frozen powder, disposed in a chamber evacuated to a degree such that water can not exist in the liquid phase, and warmed sufficiently to sublimate the water from the product. In a freeze-drying apparatus a liquid or semi-liquid product is frozen and comminuted in chambers (not shown) and passed as a finely divided frozen powder into feed hoppers 90, 92 for passage via alternately operated valved conduits, evacuate hoppers 102, 104 and vibrating feeder 124 as a thin layer of substantially uniform thickness on to a continuously operating conveyer 128 in a chamber 106 maintained at a pressure not exceeding 0À18 inch of mercury absolute. Radiators 136, 138 are mounted above and below the run of the conveyer for sublimation of the water content and the dried product flows into one of two evacuable discharge hoppers 140, 142. At least one side of the conveyer belt adjacent the radiators is coated with radiant energy-absorbing material, and the layer thickness is substantially less than one inch. The product may be reduced to powder by spraying into a stream of cold, inert gas. The product may be heated or cooled after the moisture has been sublimed therefrom.
