Abstract

1,026,884. Flexible mandrels. CROSE-UNITED CORPORATION. April 9, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 14058/63. Heading B3E. A collapsible mandrel adapted for expansion inside a pipe to support the latter for bending and for flexing with the pipe during bending, comprises a pair of normally substantially axially aligned, longitudinally spaced annular rows of thrust exerting devices, a plurality of pipe-engaging pads on said devices, structure means interconnecting the rows, and flexible means for preventing wrinkling of a pipe during bending, said means spanning the distance between the rows and being disposed for movement against the inner surface of the pipe as said pads are moved outwardly. Three longitudinally spaced expansion units 16, 18, 20, each comprise an annular row of tube engaging pads 46, 48, 50 moved radially by cylinder means 30 actuating, through links, reciprocable radial rams carrying the pads. The pads 46, which are arranged at the upper part of each annular row, and the pads 48, arranged at the sides of each annular row are resilient, while the pads 50, arranged at the lower part of each annular row, may be resilient. Between the said annular rows are arranged arcuate upper rows 62-68 of pads 46 and arcuate lower rows 76-82 of pads 50. All the pads of one longitudinal row are connected by bars extending along the inner faces of the pads, so that all the pads will be moved radially together. Flexible elements 92 94 extend along grooves in the outer faces of the longitudinal rows of pads and bear on the inner surface of the tube. The longitudinal rows of pads could be replaced by single lengths of resilient material. The mandrel is moved into position in the tube by a roller 128 driven by a motor 130.
