Abstract
Perhalopropanes of the formula X1X2X3C-CCl2-CX4X5X6 wherein X1- 6 are chlorine or fluorine atoms are made by reacting a perhaloacetone X1X2X3C-CO-CX4X5X6 with phosphorus pentachloride at a temperature of at least 200 DEG C. It is preferred to use about 2 moles phosphorus pentachloride per mole perhaloacetone. Examples relate to the preparation of (1) F2ClC-CCl2-CCl2F, (2)-(4) F3C-CCl2-CF2Cl, (5) F3C-CCl2-CF3, (6) ClF2C-CCl2-CF2Cl, (7) FCl2C-CCl2-CFCl2 and (8) Cl3C-CCl2-CCl3.
