Abstract

1,026,798. Treating or drying powders, granules &c. with gases. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 14, 1964 [Jan. 22, 1964], No. 2791/64. Headings F4B, F4G and F4U. Particulate material, e.g. fertilizer, is heated, dried, cooled or humidified while cascading through hopper-like baffles 5 each comprising two or more hoppers of unequal size located one within the other in a vertical chamber 1 supplied with treating gas at 15, the gas passing through the falling material and being exhausted at 13. Each baffle comprises three pairs of spaced steel strips disposed at 45 degrees to break the fall of the powder and a bar 12 which deflects the powder on to the inner sides of the innermost strips whence it falls to the baffle below. If the rate of feed is too great to be handled by the innermost strips the material builds up and overflows into the next outer pair of strips. Gas distributers 16 ensure that the gas is supplied uniformly to the whole surface of the cascading material. The composite baffles 5 may consist of concentric circular hoppers. The particulate material may be employed to treat the gas, e.g. for drying or purification.
