Abstract

1,026,533. Refrigerators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 23, 1962 [July 25, 1961], No. 26910/61. Heading F4H. A refrigerator comprises a lower main storage compartment and an upper compartment containing air evaporator 4, a manually adjustable thermostat 11 for controlling the temperature of the evaporator, and an adjustable damper 21 located in a restricted passage 33 between the upper compartment and the main storage compartment, adjustment of the damper being effected in conjunction with adjustment of the thermostat. The arrangement is such that when the thermostat is set to its coldest position the damper is open and is progressively closed as the thermostat control is moved to its warmest setting. As shown, natural circulation passes air from the main compartment through passage 32, over the evaporator, through restricted passage 33 and back to the main compartment via wire grid 27. Passage 33 is controlled by damper 21 in control box 10, which in turn is controlled by cam 18 mounted on spindle 17, e.g. of plastics material, which is pressed on to the thermostat spindle, both being shaped, e.g. of D-shaped cross-section, to prevent relative movement. The outer end of spindle 17 passes through the front of control box 10 and carries a control knob 20. The wire grid 27 protects lamp 28 which gives illumination to transparent indicating inserts 24 arranged round the control knob (Fig. 3, not shown). A coloured sector disc 19 is mounted on spindle 17 and serves as an indication of the position of the spindles. The disc is of such a width as to cover partially two indicating inserts 24 at once (Fig. 3, not shown). This ensures that the user turns the control knob to the fully off position in which case no coloured light is transmitted to the penultimate insert. In a modification (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) the control box is situated at the side of the upper compartment and communicates therewith through a damper controlled hole in a separating wall. In this arrangement the damper is held against the cam by a spring.
