Abstract
A hydrocarbon oil is desulphurized in a process which comprises vaporizing the oil, before or after admixture with a hydrogen-rich gas, passing the mixture over a hydrodesulphurization catalyst, for example, cobalt or nickel molybdate, in a first zone, cooling the effluent to obtain a hydrocarbon condensate which is separated from the gas and vaporized, again before or after admixture with a hydrogen-rich gas, and passing the mixture over a material selected from the oxides of zinc, manganese, and iron, with or without a hydrosulphurization catalyst, such as cobalt or nickel molybdate. The waste hydrogen sulphide-containing hydrogen gas may be burnt to heat the vaporizers. The temperature in the first and second zones may be 350-450 DEG C., and the pressure atmospheric or superatmospheric. The oil product may be vaporized, mixed with hydrogen, and subjected to steam reforming to obtain a hydrogen-rich gas.
