Abstract

<PICT:1026253/C6-C7/1> An anaerobic culturing device comprises a shallow dish 7 provided with partitions 9 forming laterally disposed segregated chambers for receiving substances for the treatment of the atmosphere within the device by chemical reaction to create conditions conducive to anaerobic growth, a perforated plate 11 having continuous open grooves 13, 14, a culture plate 22 and an imperforate cover 15, and the culture plate is of such a size and shape and is so positioned on the perforated platform as to allow for free gaseous circulation throughout the entire interior. In use, the dish and cover are sealed to the perforated plate at the grooves 13, 14 by a semi-solid petroleum sealant, a mixture 20 of 2 to 4 grams each of pyrogallic acid and sodium carbonate react in one chamber in order to remove oxygen from the atmosphere throughout the interior of the device and any carbon monoxide produced as a result of the reaction is removed from the atmosphere by filter paper 21 soaked with O.2N palladium chloride in 0.001 N hydrochloric acid. The perforated plate is formed of disposable, transparent plastic and is provided with at least one perforation for each of the segregated lower chambers. The dish and cover may also be fabricated in transparent plastic.
