Abstract

Water-soluble mixed acetals of polyvinyl alcohol with (i) an aldehyde, other than formaldehyde, free from amino groups and (ii) an amino aldehyde may be used as flocculating and soil conditioning agents. The acetals may be prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol, partially saponified polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate or a saponified copolymer of vinyl acetate with allyl alcohol or methyl vinyl ether with a mixture of non-amino and amino aldehydes in the presence of mineral acids, e.g. hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Specified aldehydes are (i) acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, heptaldehyde, decaldehyde, dodecaldehyde, benzaldehyde and alkyl substituted benzaldehydes and (ii) amino butyraldehyde, b -cyclohexylamino butyraldehyde, dimethylamino pivaldehyde, p - amino benzaldehyde and p-dimethylamino benzaldehyde, those having more than 7 carbon atoms being preferred. When used for soil conditioning the mixed acetals may be mixed with bentonite or vermiculite. Examples describe mixed acetals of polyvinyl alcohol with n-decaldehyde and b -cyclohexylamino butyraldehyde.
