Abstract

A sulphuric acid sol for use as an electrolyte in lead accumulators is prepared by adding a dry mixture of a "polyelectrolyte" and SiO2, of surface area greater than 100 m2/g., with stirring, to sulphuric acid of the concentration used in accumulators. A "polyelectrolyte" is a polymeric organic acid, base, or ampholyte containing ionic groups, e.g. carboxyl-sulphonic acid- or amino-groups, and may be natural, e.g. alginates or pectinates; or synthetic, e.g. polyacrylates, polystyrene sulphonates, or carboxymethyl cellulose. The dry mixture, which may contain 5-20 wt. per cent SiO2, preferably constitutes up to 5 vol. per cent of the sol. A stirrer operating at 200-600 r.p.m. may be used. The sol is introduced into the accumulator and solidifies to form a gel.
