Abstract

Glyceride oils, especially coconut oil and tallow, are refined by causing the oil to flow horizontally or in an upward direction at a small angle, e.g. 7-10 degrees on the surface of a moving aqueous alkali stream in a plurality of stages, the soap solution which has formed being removed from contact with the oil between consecutive stages and substantial inter-mixture of the oil and alkali solution being avoided throughout. The flow of oil and alkali may be co- or counter-current, or may be co-current within each stage but counter-current overall and the refining may be carried out at 70-100 DEG C.
