Abstract

1,025,847. Hydro-pneumatic suspension units. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 17, 1963 [Nov. 10, 1962], No. 42571/62. Heading F2S. A hydro-pneumatic suspension unit for vehicles comprises a strut incorporating a space 13 containing air or other gas under pressure as a spring and a telescopic damping means in combination with an inertia damper comprising inertia member 19 which is movable axially in the strut to pump liquid from a reservoir into the pressure space to maintain the mean length of the strut at a predetermined value. In the construction shown, the inertia member 19 is mounted within the piston-rod 17 of a piston 16 and guided upon a hollow tubular spigot 22 depending from the piston 16. The bore of the spigot 22 is sealed at its upper end by a spring- loaded, one-way valve 25. The spigot 22 is also provided with radial ports 26 which are normally closed by the inertia member 19. On the downward movement of the member 19 in the piston-rod the axial recess 23 of the member is filled with hydraulic fluid which on the return movement is pumped through valve 25 after the ports 26 are covered. When the length of the strut becomes too great, a port 29 is uncovered by the piston 16 such that hydraulic fluid may pass back to the reservoir within and around the piston-rod through passage 32 and port 31. A flexible annular bag 33 of pressurized gas may be mounted within the reservoir and a domed resilient washer 34 is provided to cushion the impacts of the inertia member against the piston.
