Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions comprise a mineral lubricating oil and an oil-soluble copolymer of an a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, vinyl acetate, and a C6- 24 alkyl fumarate, which copolymer has been reacted with a primary or secondary amine, or an aliphatic diamine which contains one tertiary amine group. Typical of such additives are the reaction products of either N,N-dimethyl-1:3-propane diamine or N-methyl piperazine with a copolymer of maleic anhydride, vinyl acetate, and mixed alkyl fumarates. Other additives which may be present include zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates; overbased alkaline earth metal sulphonates, phenols, alkyl phenols and phosphosulphurized polyolefins; and colloidal alkaline-earth metal carbonates produced by reacting alkaline earth metal base with an alkyl phenol in the presence of a phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon and a diluent oil, whilst blowing CO2 into the reaction mixture.ALSO:A copolymer of maleic anhydride, vinyl acetate and mixed alkyl fumarates (e.g. derived from fumaric acid and C6- 24 aliphatic alcohols) is reacted with either N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propane diamine or N-methyl piperazine.
