Abstract

An additive for lubricating oil is prepared by dispersing a basic alkali or alkaline earth metal compound in a solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal sulphonate in a diluent oil and passing carbon dioxide through the solution in the presence of a promoter which is a condensation product of an alkyl phenol, an aldehyde and an amine (see Division C2). The basic metal compound may be the oxide, hydroxide or hydrated hydroxide. The additive may form 0.001-30% by weight of the base oil which may be a synthetic, animal, vegetable or mineral lubricating oil or a distillate from raw paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic or mixed oils. The composition may include an ash-free dispersant additive which may be a condensation product of a C2-C6 alkylene oxide with a phospho-sulphurized hydrocarbon, the reaction product of a phospho-sulphurized hydrocarbon with a derivative of carbamic acid, e.g. a carbonate, urethane or urea, an alkenyl dicarboxylic acid imide, the products obtained by the polymerization of esters of alpha-unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids or partial esters thereof and aliphatic, cyclic or aromatic alcohols, or the products obtained by the copolymerization of one or more of said esters with vinyl acetate or styrene. The polymeric dispersant may include maleic anhydride, N-vinyl pyrrolidene or divinylbenzene in the charge to be polymerized. The composition may also include detergents, pour point improvers, viscosity index improvers, colouring matter or anti-frothing agents.ALSO:A condensation product of an alkyl phenol, an aldehyde and an amine having the general formula R-Ar(OH)-CH(R1)-NHR2 where R is alkyl Ar is an aromatic nucleus R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group and R2 is alkyl or -(R3-NH)nCH(R1)-Ar(OH)-R where R3 is alkylene and n is at least one. The preferred compound has the formula R-Ar(OH)-CH2-NH-(R3-NH)n-CH2 -Ar(OH)-R. An example describes the preparation of a promoter from nonylphenol, formol and ethylene diamine.
