Abstract
1,025,749. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 30, 1964 [Dec. 23, 1963], No. 48525/64. Heading B6B. In apparatus for feeding a record card or sheet, the card or sheet can be held away from a moving driving surface by directing an air stream between them. As applied to the separation of record cards 18 from a hopper 10 and feeding them past a processing station, the driving surface comprises a roll 30 almost totally enclosed in a casing 14 which is connected to a source of vacuum. The roll 30 is driven by a motor and comprises several spaced driving portions 62, Fig. 2 (not shown), carried by a series of discs which are apertured to equalize the suction pressure in regions 64 between the portions 62. The suction in the casing 14 and the atmospheric pressure acting on the cards 18, urge the foremost card towards the roll 30, but the card is held away from the roll by a high velocity stream of air, from a control device 22, directed between the roll and the card. The device 22, Fig. 7 (not shown) comprises a hollow elongated casing to which compressed air is supplied, and houses an electromagnetic device 36 which includes an arm 44 connected to a slider valve 34 controlling nozzles 38. When the device 36 is energized by a signal from a control curcuit, Fig. 4 (not shown), the valve 34 closes the nozzles 38, and a card 18 is fed from the hopper 10 and delivered through an opening on the opposite side of the casing 14. A reversely driven roll 31 prevents more than one card being separated, and air blasts from a device 33 assist separation. A series of shoes 35 having spring-biased portions keep the cards in engagement with the roll 30. The control circuit for the air blast device 22 is arranged so that cards can be fed one at a time in response to an external signal, e.g. from an associated data processing system, or so that cards can be fed continuously at a selected rate, or so that cards can be fed continuously with a predetermined spacing between cards.
