Abstract

Compositions suitable for the oral administration of iron to human beings and animals comprise a substantially non-ionic complex of ferric hydroxide and hydrogenated dextran having an intrinsic viscosity at 25 DEG C. of between 0.025 and 0.5, which is stable in contact with water, and dietary components having nutritional value. (The ferric hydroxide-hydrogenated dextran complexes are described in Specifications 937,235 and 1,019,513.) Nutritional substances specified are non-fat milk solids, soya flour, whole milk solids, sucrose, starch, corn oil, coconut oil, yeast, vanilla, cocoa, calcium cyclamate, saccharin, sodium ascorbate, chondrus extract, niacinamide, tocopheryl acetate, manganese sulphate, calcium pantothenate, cupric carbonate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine hydrochloride, riboflavin, folic acid, potassium iodide, vitamin A palmitate and calciferol.
