Abstract

1,025,498. Seals. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 23, 1963], No. 33500/64. Heading F2B. A seal for a centrifugal compressor circulating helium in a nuclear plant comprises a ring 29 surrounding the impeller shaft 14, a set of annular labyrinth seal elements 46, 49 extending radially inwardly towards the impeller shaft, abutment elements 44 at opposite ends of the set of seal elements 46, 49 to provide land surfaces which are normally spaced from the shaft and seal means operatively interposed between the ring 29 and casing 19. The abutment elements 44 may extend as far as, or further than, the seal elements towards a sleeve 30 which is rotatable with the impeller shaft. The ring 29 is frictionally held in position by a portion of the ring having a radial surface 62 which is pressed by a spring 68 against a radial surface 63 of a ring 58 secured to the casing 19, piston-type split-rings 54, 55 allowing radial movement of the ring in operation; the spring 68 is of waveform and is retained in a recess by a ring 64. Helium sealing gas at a greater pressure than the gas being compressed is supplied to the seal (designated 28 in Fig. 1, not shown) through a pipe (73) and duct 71 to a space 72 between the split-rings 54, 55 from where it flows inwardly through bores 76 and in both axial directions between the seal elements 46, 49 and the sleeve 30; a portion of the sealing gas will leak past the split-rings and a further portion past abutments 32, 33 of the sleeve. The sealing gas which flows past the seal elements 46 enters the impeller chamber 15 and the sealing gas which flows past the seal elements 49 enters drain passages 78, 79 and return pipe (80). When the compressor is shut down, a seal is provided between a flange 81 on the impeller shaft and an element 83 on a bellows assembly 84. The sealing gas serves also to cool the ring 29. The invention may also be applied to apparatus for circulating liquid and, if desired, the sealing fluid may be liquid instead of gas.
