Abstract

Lubricating compositions comprise (a) at leat one polyphenyl polyether of formula <FORM:1024920/C4-C5/1> in which n is an integer from 2 to 5, and (b) either a phenyl lead compound of general formula <FORM:1024920/C4-C5/2> in which Ph is a phenyl group, X is a halogen atom, and m is an integer from one to four, or a lead salt of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid, metavanadic or tungstic, acid, said compound (b) being present in minor amount sufficient to inhibit the oxidation of (a). Typical (b) compounds are triphenyl lead fluoride, diphenyl lead dichloride, diphenyl lead diiodide, diphenyl lead dibromide, lead benzoate, lead tetracetate, lead salicylate, lead naphthenate, lead oleate and lead oxalate, others also being specified.
