A churn-washing machine has a lid replacement arrangement comprising a fluid cylinder and ram device 66, 64 operatively connected to stop means 60 for lids travelling towards a lid replacement station, and control means 50, 52 (see below) for the ram and cylinder device adapted to be operated in synchronism with a churn delivery mechanism, whereby a lid is only released by the stop means at a time in the cycle of the machine when a churn 26 is held stationary at the lid replacement station. Inverted churns from a washing machine pass from a chain conveyer 14 to a turn-over mechanism 10 described in Specification 770,153, from where they pass base down, via rest 18 and rollers 22, to the lid replacement station. A churn locating and positioning mechanism 28 grips each churn and holds it at the replacement station while a lid is delivered to the mouth of the churn. This locating mechanism comprises a pneumatic cylinder 30 with an upwardly directed ram 32, Fig. 2 (not shown) connected to a pair of outwardly directed toggle links 34, 36 pivoted on levers 38, 40 each carrying a pair of gripping rollers 48. The cylinder 30 is controlled by a pilot valve 50 operated by a cam 52 on the shaft of the conveyer 14 such that each time the turn-over mechanism operates, the ram 32 is retracted to swing the levers 38, 40 inwardly so that the rollers 48 grip the churn. The lids are located on a lid slide 54 carrying a lid stop rod 60 fixed on a shaft 56 whose rotation is controlled by a lever 62 connected to the ram 64 of the pneumatic cylinder 66. The cylinder 66 is controlled by the pilot valve 50 in synchronism with the cylinder 30 such that its ram 64 is retracted to lift the stop rod 60 to allow a lid to slide to the churn when the latter is gripped by the rollers 48.
