Abstract

A catalyst comprising water and an organo aluminium compound is used in the polymerization of oxacyclobutane and derivatives thereof of the type <FORM:1024815/C3/1> where X and Y may be hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, nitro, cyano, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl or acyl groups, or have the formula -(CH2)nZ where n>1 and 2 is a halogen, hydroxyl, alkoxy, amino, acylamino, acyloxy, acyl or cyano group, and the organo aluminium compound has the formula R3- nAlXn where n is 0, 1 or 2, and R is an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group, and X is a halogen, alkoxy, acyloxy or secondary amine group. The molar ratio of water to organo-aluminium compound ranges from 0.01 to 3.0:1, and is preferably 0.1 to 2.0:1. The organo-aluminium compound used is usually 0.01 to 50, preferably 0.1 to 10 mole per cent of the monomer. Examples are given of the polymerization of 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane, using triethyl aluminium, or diethyl aluminium monochloride and water, and of the copolymerization of oxacyclobutane with 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane, and of 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane with 3,3-bis-(bromomethyl) oxacyclobutane, and of 3,3-dimethyl-oxacyclobutane with 3,3-bis-(chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane and 3,3-bis-(bromomethyl) oxacyclobutane, to give a terpolymer, using triethylaluminium-water systems.
