Abstract

High molecular weight highly crystalline trans-1,4-polybutadiene soluble in aromatics is obtained by polymerizing butadiene in an inert diluent using as catalyst (a) at least one soluble compound of vanadium free from chlorine and (b) at least one organo-aluminium halide AlRnX(3- n) where R is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, X is a halogen and "n" is a number between 1.5 and 2, the molar ratio of (a) to (b) being 0.001:1 to 0.2:1. If completely gel-free trans-1,4-polybutadiene is required 0.001 to 0.5 mols of an electron donor per mol of (b) are added. The electron donor compound may be a nitrogen compound selected from primary, secondary and tertiary amines, a hydrazine, an azo-compound or a heterocyclic nitrogen compound. Component (b) is preferably used in an amount of 0.005 to 0.5 mole with reference to 1 litre of diluent and the amount of diluent is preferably 5 to 50 times the amount of butadiene. In the examples component (a) used is vanadium triacetylacetonate, components (b) used are ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and diethyl aluminium monochloride and the only electron donor compound used is azobenzene.
