Abstract

6-Acylaminopenicillanic acids are produced by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) with a compound of general formula <FORM:1024809/C2/1> in which X is -CO- or -SO2- and acyl is the radical of an organic carboxylic acid. The reaction may be carried out with anhydrous solvents, e.g. methylene chloride, or aqueous solvents, e.g. aqueous acetone, at room temperature or with cooling by ice. Phenoxyacetyl-6-aminopenicillanic acid is prepared from 6-APA and N-phenoxyacetylphthalimide or phenoxyacetyl saccharin; a -phenoxypropionyl-6-aminopenicillanic acid is prepared from N-(a -phenoxypropionyl)-phthalimide. N-Phenoxyacetyl phthalimide is prepared by reacting phenoxyacetylchloride with potassium phthalimide in acetone. N-(a -phenoxypropionyl)-phthalimide is similarly prepared. N-Phenoxyacetyl saccharin is prepared by reacting potassium saccharin with phenoxyacetyl chloride in acetone. N-(a -phenoxypropionyl) saccharin and N-a (-phenoxybutyryl)-saccharin are similarly prepared.
