Abstract

1,024,640. Radio direction finders. D. C. A. CROWHURST. Nov. 12, 1964 [Nov. 21, 1963], No. 46028/63. Heading H4D. A hand-held self-contained null position direction finding apparatus comprises, within a casing 10, Fig. 1, a ferrite rod directional aerial 18 feeding a transistorized printed circuit radio receiver 20, and a compass 34 whereby the bearing of the received radio signal may be indicated. The aerial 18 is housed in an upper elongated portion 14 of the casing and the receiver and compass are contained in a cylindrical portion 12 of the casing. The receiver, which is powered by batteries 39, has a tuning condenser 22 with movable vanes moved by gear-wheel 24 and a disc 28, the disc protruding through the casing so as to be externally adjustable. The frequency to which the receiver is tuned is indicated on a scale 26 fixed to gear-wheel 24 and viewable through a window 32 having a vertical-cursor inscribed thereon. The compass has a compass and 35 fixed to the magnets 34 and provided with a transparent graduated turned-down edge 36 which is also viewed through window 26. A push button switch 50 energizes a lamp 54 behind the compass and frequency scales so that they may be viewed in the dark. The audio output of the receiver is listened to by means of ear plug 46, two such plugs being provided for noisy external conditions. A switch 52 energizes a beat frequency oscillator so that audible signals can be heated from received C.W. beacon signals. A volume control is also provided. A pair of sights is provided on top of the elongated portion 14 of the casing.
