Abstract

858,728. Radio direction-finding. MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE OF HER MAJESTY'S CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. Sept. 12, 1958, No. 29331/58. Class 40(7). A direction-finder for determining the direction of a radiation source in the presence of ambient random radiation comprises two angularlyspaced unidirectional broad-beam aerials 10, 11 having partially overlapping directivity patterns and a reference source of power 12, e.g. a dummy aerial, adapted to supply power equivalent to said ambient random radiation. The aerials 10, 11 and the power source 12 are connected cyclically one at a time to a receiver 14 under the control of a switching frequency generator 16 and the receiver output is applied through a narrow-band filter 19 tuned to the aerial switching frequency to a phase comparator 17 together with a reference signal output from the generator 16, the output # from the phase comparator 17 being applied to a bearing display 22. Expressions are given for the values of # in terms of the amplitudes A and C of the signals received by the two aerials when the switching periods for each aerial are 120 degrees, 135 degrees and 90 degrees, the corresponding switching periods for the reference signal being 120 degrees, 90 degrees and 180 degrees, and it is shown that the value of # is independent of the signal strength, even if the latter is below noise level.
