Abstract

1,024,291. Vehicle independent suspensions. HUMBER Ltd. Feb. 13, 1963 [Feb. 14, 1962], No. 5635/62. Heading B7D. A suspension such that the rear suspension roll centre a is lower than the front suspension roll centre b to provide increasing understeer with increasing lateral acceleration comprises a pair of trailing arms or semi-trailing arms 12 with pivot axes 14 at the rear and a pair of swing axles 21 with pivot axes 22 at the front. The wheels may be sprung by coil springs 15 with dampers 16 or by torsion bar or air springs. The front roll centre b (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) is preferably on or close to the central axis through the front wheels and the point c for each rear wheel 11 where the pivot axis 14 cuts the vertical plane through the rear wheel centres and which determines the height of the rear roll centre is at a horizontal distance beyond the vehicle centre-line between <SP>1</SP>/ 10 the track and infinity.
