Abstract

1,024,159. Moulded boxes. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Feb. 12, 1964 [July 1, 1963], No. 5940/64. Heading B8P. [Also in Divisions B5 and E2] A box is moulded from a foam plastics material such as polystyrene and comprises a lid 11, body 12 and an interconnecting bridge, the bridge being subjected to a compressive force in excess of the initial compressive strength of the foam plastics material to provide a flexible hinge 22. The bridge is compressed between an anvil 17 and a rod 21 actuated by a platen 15, these components forming part of the moulding press, and compression lasts sufficiently long, e.g. 40-60 sees., to allow partial diffusion of compressed air within the cells of the bridge without, however, allowing complete loss of its cellular structure. Portions 24, Fig. 4 (not shown), of the hinge 22 may be flexed through 90 degrees to bring the lid 11 and body 12 into face-to-face contact.
