Abstract
1,023,637. Bearings. GEORG FISCHER A.G. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 16, 1963], No. 33609/64. Heading F2A. A bearing assembly for a rotatable shaft 1 (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises a pair of taperroller bearings 4, 5 which are separated from one another by a pair of spacer rings 6, 7 made of different materials, e.g. nickel-iron alloy and bronze, to effect substantially constant clearances in the bearings by compensating for differences in the thermal expansion of the inner races 13, 16 and the outer races 14, 15 due to dissimilarity in the rates at which the races dissipate heat generated when the shaft rotates, the coefficients of thermal expansion of said materials being appropriate to the materials and heat-dissipation rates of the adjacent races. The outer races are retained in a housing 2 by a ring 3 secured by a plurality of bolts 40, whereas the inner races are retained on the shaft by a pair of nuts 9, 10 and a resilient ring 8. Alternatively, the assembly may comprise a pair of ball bearings 24, 25 (Fig. 2, not shown) of the cup-and-cone type. One of the spacer rings may be made of carbon steel instead of a nickeliron alloy.
