Abstract

1,023,553. Leaf filters. AMETEK Inc. Nov. 27, 1962 [Nov. 27, 1961], No. 44903/62. Heading BID. A leaf filter comprises an enclosure 10, rotatable leaf means 14 within the enclosure, rotated by motor 29, rotatable cake removal means (scraper 41, arm 39) and means for moving the cake removal means (shaft 32, motor 37) across a face of the leaf means so as to remove cake therefrom as the leaf means is rotated. Washing or sluicing of the cake may be effected simultaneously with the action of the scraper if desired by supplying liquid through hollow shaft 32 and apertures 40, or, if desired, the scraper 41 may be detached and the rotatable arm 39 used solely for washing and sluicing. As shown, the leaf means are mounted on the hollow shaft 13 journalled in bearing 15 in the removable cover 11 of enclosure 10 and are moved into and out of the enclosure by means of rollers running on tracks 28, 48. Cake removal means 41, 39 are mounted on hollow shaft 32 also journalled in the cover, the ends of shafts 13 and 32 remote from the cover being removably received in bearings indicated generally at 16. Entry of hollow shaft 13 into bearing 16 is facilitated by a tapered portion 25, Fig. 3 (not shown). Slurry is supplied to the enclosure and filtrate withdrawn via apertures 22, Fig. 5 (not shown) in hollow shaft 13. To remove the cake, motor 29 is started, causing the leaves to rotate. Cake removal shaft motor 37 is then started, causing shaft 32 to rotate clockwise, moving arms 39 from the retracted position of Fig. 2 to the substantially horizontal position shown by the dotted lines. Sluicing, or scraping, or both, is effected as previously described. Cake falls into trough 49 and is conveyed by conveyer 51 having helices 52 and 53, Fig. 3 (not shown) arranged in opposite directions to the central cake discharge aperture 17A. The scraper, Fig. 4 (not shown), has blades 43, 44, to which a plastic strip 65 e.g. of polytetrafluoroethylene, may be attached if desired (Fig. 11, not shown), permitting close contact between the scraper blade and the leaf face. A filter leaf, Fig. 8 (not shown), comprises course wire screens 18 enclosed by fine wire screens 19 engaging opposite sides of ring 71, and held in place by a pair of mating clamping rings 62, 63 fastened by bolts 64.
