Abstract
<PICT:1023475/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1023475/C6-C7/2> In a fusion coating process in which a body to be coated is while in a heated condition brought into contact with a pulverulent heat-fusible metal, an area of the body is masked against contact with the metal and maintained covered with a blanket of gas while the heated body is maintained in contact with the fusible metal. As shown, part, viz. the edges 72, of a body B, Fig. 1, to be coated by immersion in a fluidized bed of metal R is masked by the hollow shield 26, the face 30 of which contacting the body being foraminous; and air supplied via conduit 24 escapes through the face 30 and forms a blanket around the adjacent surface of the body B thus preventing the access of coating metal thereto. In an alternative embodiment the mask may be in two parts, 308, 309, Fig. 9, affixed to the ends of tongs 301, 302, the inner surfaces being foraminous and supplied with gas via piper 306 and the tubular handles of the tongs.
