Abstract

1,023,310. Bearings. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 23, 1962, No. 32383/62. Heading F2A. In a cylindrical gas spin bearing, incorporated in a gyroscope, gas is forced into the annular space between the relatively moving parts by helical grooves, 0.0001 inch deep, inscribed on the bearing surface of either the fixed or moving parts. As shown, the member 15 is rotated on stationary shaft 13 by the armature 31 and hysteresis ring 21. The cylindrical bearing surface 16 is provided with helical grooves 39, 41 which act as pumps and force gas between 13 and 16 with a maximum pressure midway between the ends of the bearing. In an alternative form, not shown, the helices are oppositely directed so as to produce a maximum gas pressure at the ends of the shaft and a minimum at the centre.
