Abstract

1,023,030. Tyre repair plugs. O. GRUBER, and W. GRUBER, [trading as STAHLGRUBER OTTO GRUBER & CO.]. Aug. 13, 1963 [Aug. 13, 1962; May 18, 1963], No. 31970/63. Heading B7C. Holes in tyres are repaired by inserting repair elements (Figs. 1 . . . 8) which comprise sections of elastic vulcanized rubber embedded in plastic unvulcanized rubber, the unvulcanized rubber serving to vulcanize the element into place, but some rubber remaining permanently unvulcanized. In Fig. 1 (not shown) layers (1), (2) are unvulcanized, centre layer (3) is vulcanized rubber, the element shown being of strip form. More layers may be employed (Figs. 2, 5, not shown), and elements may be of cylindrical shape with cords (9) of vulcanized rubber (Fig. 7, not shown), or of rectangular section (Fig. 8, not shown). Elements may be constricted in the middle (Fig. 6, not shown). Outer layers of unvulcanized rubber (2), (10) (Figs. 1, 7), only, may contain sulphur or accelerator to vulcanize the rubber on contact with vulcanizing fluid or paste, or all the unvulcanized rubber may include sulphur or accelerator, since only the peripheral parts will in fact be exposed to the liquid or paste. Fig. 9 (not shown) illustrates a tool comprising a roughened or threaded cylinder 13 mounted in a handle 14 and carrying a bent wire head (12) which forms an eye 18. The cylinder 13 is axially adjustable in the handle 14. In use, a repair element is bent double (Fig. 1), and inserted in eye 18. The element and tool are dipped in vulcanizing paste and pushed through the hole in the tyre as shown, which has been abraded by cylinder 13 and lubricated. The element is stretched in inserting, but the elastic vulcanized sections restore its shape when the tool is withdrawn (Fig. 12, not shown), the outer unvulcanized sections filling the hole before being themselves vulcanized by the paste, and the inner unvulcanized sections remaining plastic. A hole may be filled by more than one element, and elements need not be bent double in use.
