Abstract

Porous metal is made by pressing a mixture of metal powder and powdered filler until the particles become cold-welded together and then leaching out the filler from the metal. For example, porous accumulator plates are made by compacting zinc and sodium nitrate or lead and potassium sulphate or lead and sodium nitrate and leaching in each case with warm water. Alternative zinc and potassium iodide are compacted to form the plates and the cell electrolyte used to effect leaching.
