Abstract

1,022,961. Packaging elongated articles. J. DIESTERWEG. Dec. 22, 1962, No. 48520/62. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B4] A machine for packaging drinking straws or the like comprises means for longitudinally folding a paper &c. web to U-section, a device for feeding the articles into the channel so formed and means forming longitudinal and end seals to produce a closed tubular container, comprising two co-operating sealing rollers which the partially-wrapped articles pass between and which have continuous knurled heat sealing or crimping surfaces extending over part of their width to form the longitudinal seal and knurled portions extending over all their width in a narrow region to form the transverse seals and wherein each of the rollers has a slot in this narrow region with a pivotally mounted cutter in the slot of one roller for cutting the web between the packages. A web 8 is fed through a printing device 9 and into a guide where it is longitudinally folded. The articles 2 are fed into the folded web 16 from a magazine 17 and dogs 19, 20 of a chain conveyer 18 cause them to assume the same speed as the web, which is then passed between two rollers 21, 22 having knurled surfaces as in Fig. 5 (not shown) and these effect sealing. The packages are severed from the web by a cutting device 27 in a radial slot 28 in roller 21, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), which moves out of the slot into another slot 31 in roller 22, at the requisite time, (see also Division B4). The rollers 21, 22 are interchangeable and their mountings adjustable so that the machine can be set to deal with articles of varying sizes.
