Abstract

Derivatives of the dianthrone ethylene series suitable as pigment dyestuffs, are made by treating a dianthrone ethylene, in the presence of an organic sulphone having 2-4 carbon atoms, for example dimethyl sulphone or tetramethylene sulphone, with an alkali metal hydroxide at an elevated temperature until the reaction mixture is capable of forming a blue precipitate on oxidation, and subsequently oxidizing the leuco compounds containined in said reaction mixture into blue dyestuffs. Examples are given in which dianthrone ethylene and dichloro-dianthrone ethylene are used as starting materials.
