Ingots, e.g. of uranium carbide, with equiaxial crystallization and fine grains are made by melting and casting granules of the material concerned which are less than 1 mm. in diameter and have been made by melting and solidification. The granules 12 are melted in an electron beam furnace 1 and the continuous casting mould assembly is rotated by drive 22 through gears 18, 20, Fig. 1 (not shown).
