Abstract

1,022,069. Winding cable; traverse mechanism. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES LTD. Sept. 5, 1963, No. 35121/63. Heading D1J. The cable 1 is traversed onto the drum 2 by a traverse guide 5 on a screw-threaded shaft 6, the shaft 6 being driven by an electromagnetic clutch 8 interposed between the shaft 6 and reciprocable connecting rod 11, the reciprocable rod 11 activating the shaft 6 during one direction of its stroke, there being clutch control means for selecting the direction of the stroke during which the connecting rod is coupled by the clutch 8 to the shaft 6. The connecting rod 11 is reciprocated by a rotating cam 13 driven by gearing 14 and activating a changeover-switch 16 during each half revolution thereof such that the clutch 8 is only energized during every upward stroke of the connecting rod 11. The traverse guide 5 then moves to the right in a series of steps until it strikes a limit switch 20 activating a further change-over-switch 17. The resulting new setting of the switch 17 causes the rotating cam 13 to actuate the change-over-switch 16 such that the clutch 8 is only energized during each downward stroke of the connecting rod 11. The traverse guide 5 then moves to the left in a series of steps until it strikes a further limit switch 19 that causes the change-over-switch 17 to revert to its original setting. The distance between the limit switches 19 and 20 may be adjustable to vary the length of traverse. The connecting rod 11 has a pivotal connection 10 at its upper end that is adjustable in a slot 18 to vary the angular rotation of the screw-threaded shaft 6 per connecting rod stroke.
