Abstract

1,022,005. Electrostatic precipitation. ELECTRO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 2, 1964 [Dec. 6, 1963], No. 48382/63. Heading B2J. Mist or spray formation over a liquid, e.g. an electrolyte contained in a tank 1 of an electroplating plant, is controlled by means of an electrostatic collecting system arranged above the liquid level to collect particulate liquid evolved from the liquid. In the arrangement shown, the collecting system comprises screens 4, 5 carried by supports 7, 8 and respectively connected to a high electrostatic potential and to earth. Each screen may be formed by a flat sheet of wire mesh carried in a frame or by a solid or perforated sheet. The supports 6, 8 may be so mounted that the screens 4, 5 may be hinged or swung upwardly and outwardly away from the top of the tank. In operation, the droplets of liquid collected on the screens coalesce and fall back into the tank. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), each of the lower screens is corrugated and slopes downwards towards the outer side edge thereof where a gutter with a drain pipe is provided to return the collected liquid to the tank. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the screens are mounted vertically above the sides of the tank and to reduce the amount of mist or spray which might escape from the open end of the tank a current of air may be caused to flow into the space between the screens.
