Abstract

An organopolysiloxane of the general formula <FORM:1021936/C3/1> wherein each R is H or a monovalent hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical, R1 is the divalent radical > C2H3R111 in which R111 is H or a monovalent organic group, R11 is a pyridyl or substituted pyridyl group, A is a triorganosilyl group, a is 0 or 1, b is preferably not greater than 600, and c may be 0 and is preferably not greater than 500, can be made by reacting an alkenyl pyridine with a linear, cross-linked or cyclic polysiloxane having at least one Si-bonded H atom, preferably in the presence of a Pt catalyst and at 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. in the presence or absence of a solvent. The R radicals may contain F and CN substituents and the A groups may contain chlorophenyl radicals. The resulting pyridyl siloxanes may be equilibrated in known manner with conventional siloxanes or they may be converted into quaternary salts of high stability by reacting them with alkyl or alkylene halides. In a typical Example (1) an ether solution of a trimethylsilyl - terminated methylhydrogensiloxane, 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, 4-t-butyl-catechol and a cyclohexane/platinous chloride complex, was refluxed at 120 DEG C. for 4 hours to yield, after removal of solvent and reaction with methyl iodide, a highly viscous product possessing surface active and ion exchange properties. Uses.-Alone or with other siloxanes to improve adhesion, dyeing properties, flame resistance and low temperature flexibility; the quaternary salts are useful in pharmaceutical preparations, fungicides, insecticides, herbicides and as wetting agents and corrosion inhibitors. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 932,431.
