Abstract

1,021,786. Crushing. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 27, 1965 [Feb. 6, 1964], No. 5070/64. Heading B2A. A method of crushing comprises discharging all the energy stored in a capacitor through a spark discharge gap in a liquid medium in a time of not more than about one microsecond. Preferably, at least 85% of the energy is discharged in a time of 0À5 microsecond. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a spark discharge gap defined by electrodes 4, 10 immersed in a liquid medium contained in a vessel 1 provided with an insulating lining 2, the electrodes being connected by a gas spark gap, defined by electrodes 11, 15, to opposite plates 7, 13 of at least one capacitor, the plate 13 being connected to a source of high potential and the circuit comprising the spark gaps and the capacitor having an inductance of not more than 0À1 microhenries. The electrodes 11, 15 are surrounded by a metal tube 6, having an insulating lining 8, formed integrally with the tube I and with the plate 7 of the capacitor so that the parts 1, 6 and 7 are electrically connected together and to earth, the electrode 4 being the earthed electrode. The crushing vessel may be in the form of an annulus. More than one crushing vessel may be provided.
