Abstract
A pure lactam is obtained by re-arranging a cycloalkanone oxime with sulphuric or phosphoric acid, diluting the re-arrangement mixture with water, extracting the lactam with an acidic organic compound which is (a) liquid at the extraction temperature, (b) not substantially soluble in the acid phase of the re-arrangement mixture, and (c) chemically inert with respect to the re-arrangement mixture, and has a dissociation constant of 10-2 to 10-15, and separating the acidic organic compound from the extract, e.g. by distillation. The extract may be washed with water. The process may be operated cyclically with recycling of water, sulphuric or phosphoric acid and acidic organic compound. Specified acidic organic compounds include phenol, cresols, xylenols, mono- and di-chlorophenols, nitrophenols, valeric acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, chlorostearic acid, phenylacetic acid, amyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol. The lactams of aminovaleric, aminocaproic, aminocaprylic, aminoundecanoic and aminolauric acids may be prepared.
