Abstract
1,021,704. Road traffic signals on vehicles. C. VAN DER LELY N.V. April 23, 1964 [May 21, 1963], No. 16963/64. Heading G4Q. [Also in Divisions F1 and H2] A stop light on a vehicle is illuminated when a gear lever is displaced towards a neutral position at a speed in excess of a predetermined minimum. In the arrangement shown an hydraulic variable-speed gear is controlled by a gear lever 7 which is connected to a piston 12 in an oil-filled cylinder 11. When the lever 7 is displaced away from its central position, the piston rises in the cylinder and oil passes through a channel 28 and through a duct 17 against the pressure of a weak spring 16 acting on a ball 15. Movement of the lever back to its neutral position causes the piston to be lowered, and movement of the oil is impeded because duct 20 is closed by a ball 18 and a stronger spring 19; consequently the pressure of the oil in the lower part of the cylinder rises and, if the movement of the lever is sufficiently rapid, is sufficient to close a pressure switch 22 which completes the electrical circuit for the stop light 26.
