Abstract
1,021,684. Breathing apparatus. NORMALAIR Ltd. Feb.18, 1964 [Feb. 23, 1963], No. 7368/63. Heading A5T. Breathing equipment for an aviator includes housing 3 having associated therewith a demand regulator 5 and having a large bore connection, to which is fitted hose 2 leading to mask 1, and a small bore high pressure oxygen supply pipe 9, adapted to be connected to an oxygen pressure source on the aircraft, the housing 3 being adapted to be worn on the front or side portions of the user's torso. The housing 3 has an air inlet valve 6, the airflow to which is prevented by a spring- controlled shut-off valve 7 when the supply pressure to the regulator 5 is above a predetermined value. The housing 3 may be connected to the wearing apparel of the user by connections 10,12. Pipe 9 is connected to the oxygen supply via a control box 14, in which the supply pipe has an orifice 15. By-pass lines 16, via manual and aneroid-controlled valves 17 and 18, are provided. Hose 2 may be connected by connection 4 to an additional oxygen supply. In use, oxygen is supplied at a predetermined pressure to regulator 5. An inhalation regulator 5 opens and oxygen enters housing 3. The oxygen supplied is insufficient to meet the demands, so inlet valve 6 opens as a result of a drop in pressure in housing 3 and pipe 9. When the aviator requires a 100% oxygen supply, the manual valve 17 or aneroid valve 18 is opened. This results in the pressure in pipe 9 being above the predetermined valve, so shut-off valve 7 closes and no air reaches valve 6.
