Abstract

A process for the manufacture of a meshwork comprising a plurality of intersecting filaments and/or strands of cellular polymeric material comprises supplying polymeric material and a vaporizable expanding agent separately to a mixing zone feeding an extrusion die from which the meshwork is produced and extruding the resultant expandable polymeric material under conditions permitting expansion of the material as it leaves the extrusion die, and in such a manner that intersections between the filaments and/or strands are formed either as integrally extruded masses or by the union of filaments and/or strands subsequent to the extrusion thereof. The expanding agent is preferably a hydrocarbon boiling between 10 DEG and 80 DEG C. especially n-pentane or isopentane. Suitable polymeric material is polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene containing more than 50% styrene. Polyethylene and polypropylene may also be used. The cellular meshworks can be crushed before use or may be bonded to sheet material, e.g. paper or polymeric or cellular polymeric materials.
