Abstract

1,021,103. Arresting aircraft. ALL-AMERICAN ENGINEERING CO. April 16. 1964. No. 15778/64. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F2] The ends of a nylon arrester cable 10 reeved about sleeves 11, 12, 13, 14 and crossing a landing surface R are wound around two spaced drums 18, 19 of a cable reel 17. The reel 17 is connected through a spindle 21 and a one-way clutch 23 to the impeller shaft 24 of a hydro-dynamic brake. The impeller shaft 24 is provided with blades 41 each of which cooperates with a stator blade 40 in the liquid filled housing 32. The liquid is passed through a heat exchange or heat transfer means 58. A pump P maintains the correct volume and pressure in the brake and also, on actuation of the valve 47, operates a rotary turbine 25 to disengage the clutch 23 by axial movement of the spindle 21 to re-wind the cable after an arresting operation. The reel is provided with brake shoes 60, 61 to prevent overrun of the drums at initial payout. The spindle 21 is provided with a helical spline 22 which cooperates with a groove in the bore of the reel 17 such that the reel may have limited relative movement with respect to the spindle to control the uniformity of wind.
