Abstract

Compositions for dental care comprise a fluorine-containing compound which releases fluoride ions in water, a finely divided, physiologically inert synthetic plastic or resin which acts as a filler, and a water-insoluble alkali metal polyphosphate or calcium pyrophosphate which acts as an abrasive, such composition being substantially free from water-insoluble calcium salts other than calcium pyrophosphate. The compositions may also contain the usual flavouring and binding agents, humectants and water. Suitable fillers include polyvinyl chloride and powdered epoxy resins. The preferred polyphosphate salt is sodium polymetaphosphate. Specified fluorine compounds are sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, ammonium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, zirconium fluoride, stannous fluoride, amine hydrofluorides, quaternary ammonium fluorides and addition compounds of inorganic fluorides or hydrofluoric acid with amino acids.
