Abstract

Dentifrices comprise a polishing agent mixture consisting of from 0.1 to 40% (preferably 0.25 to 5%) by weight of an anhydrous a -alumina having smooth-surface and rounded particles of an average size within the range of from 0.05 to 5 microns and a Moh's hardness of 9, and from 99.9 to 60% of one or more additional polishing agents having a Moh's hardness of less than 6; e.g. dicalcium orthophosphate dihydrate (preferred), other calcium phosphates, sodium polymetaphosphate, calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate. Optional ingredients include soap or synthetic detergents, oxygen releasers e.g. perborates, buffers, carriers and softeners e.g. glycerine, sorbitol, mineral oil, honey; buffers, binders and therapeutic agents e.g. tyrothrycin, chlorophyllins, hexachlorophene, the sarcosides and water-soluble ionizable fluoride compounds, usually in amounts of from 0.01 to 2% by weight of the total. The dentifrice may be in the form of a toothpaste, tooth powder or solid dentifrice which may comprise from 20 to 99.5% by weight of the polishing agent.
