Abstract

Oxidized polymers are produced by subjecting a solution in an inert solvent of an organic polymer containing carbon-hydrogen bonds to ultra-violet radiation in the presence of oxygen and a halo-aliphatic compound as catalyst. The polymer may be derived from styrene, ethylene, propylene, butadiene, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate or vinyl acetate. The solvent may be an aromatic compound, e.g. benzene, and a hydrogen donor, e.g. ethyl alcohol, may be present during oxidation. The catalyst may be carbon tetrabromide. A graft polymer may be produced by initiating polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. in benzene, by means of the above oxidized polymer so that the monomer is graft polymerized on to the oxidized polymer. The monomer may be methyl methacrylate and the oxidized polymer may be polystyrene. The graft polymerization may be catalysed using a reducing agent, e.g. ferrous caprylate.
