1,020,664. Etching. S. FOWLER. Jan. 20, 1965 [Feb. 6, 1964], No. 5094/64. Addition to 965,633. Heading B6J. A process for producing decorative patterns on the surface of a corrosion-resistant ferrous alloy such as stainless steel, coated with a durable material of a colour different from that of the alloy, such as nickel plate, chrome-plate or vitreous enamel containing boric acid or anhydrous sodium tetraborate, comprises applying a resist to areas of the coating defining the desired patterns or a negative thereof by using a blank transfer material bearing the resist in the desired form imposed by a master pattern. The uncovered portions of the coating are then etched with a mineral acid such as a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid or hydrofluoric acid. The resist may be printing ink, a mixture of beeswax, tar and carbon black, a varnish such as Sumatra Gum Benzoine or South American asphaltum, beeswax or plasticine.
