Abstract

1,020,490. Hydraulic accumulators. H. M. PURCELL. Nov. 28, 1962, No. 44919/62. Heading FIP. An hydraulic accumulator Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a rigid outer cylindrical shell 1 and a resilient inner tube 6 defining therebetween an annular chamber 1e, the inner tube 6 having a piston 9 reciprocable therein to pressurize a liquid supplied through an opening 18 in a base member 1a in response to the pressure of gas supplied through an inlet valve V in a cover member 1b the gas also passing to the annular chamber 1e through a plurality of openings 14 in the inner tube 6. A spring 12 is disposed between the cover 1b and the piston 9 which is provided with an undercut portion defining an annular chamber 10 communicating through a hole 11 with the liquid on the side 10a of the piston. The flexible inner tube is of rubber and is coated on one or both sides by a layer of plastics material. Alternatively the inner tube may be of polyethylene. An upper retaining ring 3b is secured between the cylindrical shell 1 and the cover member 1b and has secured thereto by a metal band 8 one end of the inner tube 6 the other end of which is secured in like manner to a lower retaining ring 3 secured between the cylinder 1 and the base 1a. The lower retaining ring 3 has a bore 3d for a slidably mounted valve member 13 having a hollow shaft provided with bores 13b through which liquid can pass from the opening 18 to the side 10a of the piston. The valve 13 is urged to the open position by a spring 19 and is closed by the downward movement of the piston causing the valve to abut an 'O'-ring 19a. A safety blowout fuse 15 is threaded into the cover 1b and includes a rupturable diaphragm 17. In another construction, Fig. 4 (not shown) the inner tube 38 is secured at its lower end to a cap 22 having an orifice 34 and at its upper end to a thin metal cap 42 having holes 48 and being secured at its centre to a top cap 21. The piston 50 comprises a metal bottom 52, a cylindrical portion 60 outwardly flanged at 62, a washer 64, and a U-shaped rubber-like wiper ring 66. A fitting 26 having a valve seat disposed deep down therein to prevent gas escaping in the event of external fracture is screwed into a bore 25 in the top cap 21. In two further constructions (not shown) different piston constructions are described. The axis of the accumulator may be curved instead of straight.
