Abstract

The instantaneous alcohol content during the fermentative oxidation of alcohol to acetic acid is tested by collecting the waste gas in known amount or at a known rate and measuring the alcohol content especially colorimetrically or by selectively oxidizing in the presence of a catalyst and measuring the heat evolved, particularly using the oxygen in the waste gases. The result, preferably obtained in terms of an electric signal, may be used to control withdrawal of fermented substrate and/or the addition of alcohol bearing substrate to maintain the alcohol content in the fermenter within the desired range. The addition and/or withdrawal may be made cyclic or continuous. The measuring means preferred comprise a colorimetric or a catalytic oxidation reactor as disclosed in Specification 897,166. The invention is described with reference to 5 flow sheets (not shown) and one detailed materials balance.
